You’re making the assumption that the physical body you have ties with your gender identity. Genderbending gives the implication that you need to have a certain body type in order to be considered for a certain gender. Please use those skills on literally anything else than on Light but with tits. And I know I’m talking about fictional characters and not real people, but always remember that fiction impacts reality.Īnd don’t even get me started on the designs I’ve seen. It’s shitty to take that and flip them back to a gender that don’t identify as. Trans people work hard on their transitions. And if you headcanon a character as trans and still genderbend them then that’s another can of Yikes right there. And it’s not just me, this has made a lot of my trans friends very uncomfortable within multiple fandoms. It’s worse seeing him depicted as a woman cause that sets off disphoria alarms in my mind. I already hate seeing L, someone who I see as nonbinary because of self projection, described as a guy. Genderbending basically means you’re making the assumption that a character is cis, which is not the worst thing imaginable, but understand that your views on a character doesn’t matches someone else’s.
Misa could be a trans girl, L could be nonbinary, Light could actually be genderfluid. Unless it’s mentioned that a character is cis within the material, it’s all up for grabs. I’m sure many of you are ready to say that I’m jumping to conclusions, but maybe spend a couple of minutes reading my explanation before typing out that comment? Cool? Here’s the problem though: genderbending is actually transphobic. It’s just a fun way to express different ideas or a new take on an old story and blah blah blah. Now on the surface genderbending may not seem like a huge issue. I mean there are a lot of issues, some possibly more important than this one, but I’ve noticed how common this has become, and it’s starting to bother not just me but quite a few other people in the fandom. So there’s an issue in the Death Note Fandom.
